Face to face course at the HSU- UCO School of Osteopathy over 3 days.

Course description

This course is suitable for physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths and speech and language therapists.

With a mix of practical workshops and underpinning research and theory this course will identify the main challenges of a patient presenting with voice dysfunction with special focus but not exclusively on the artistic vocal field.

The course will cover the assessment of the phonatory system, and management of overuse.

Learning objectives

·       The seminar is dedicated to learning the mechanisms of voice production in normal situation and in the artistic performance, as well as the manual treatment aimed at recovering and maintaining proper function.

·       The main dysfunctions and pathologies affecting the vocal cords and vocal tract will be explored in depth.

·       We will examine the relationship between the diaphragmatic-pulmonary system, the vocal folds and the vocal tract in the voice production

·       A significant portion of the seminar will be focused on practical assessment of the functioning of the laryngeal tract.

·       Participants will learn basic techniques of laryngeal manipulation.

The goal is to train professionals who can collaborate, respecting their roles, within teams alongside other voice specialists (ENT specialists, speech therapists).

11.30 -12. 30 the larynx speaking and singing, anatomical structure and muscle contraction in vocal production - workshop

13.30 -15.30 basic laryngeal mechanism, chest voice and head voice - workshop

15.30 – 16.30 resonance and consonance, body and air vibrations - practice

16.30 – 17.30 different vocal ranges - workshop

Day 2

9.30-10 30 vocal spectrum – practice

10.30 -11.30 biomechanics of the singer on stage - practice

11.30 – 12.30 main issues of the singer, red flags! – workshop

12.30 -13.30 lunch

13.30 -15.30 assessment of the singer, anamnestic data - practice

15.30 – 16.30 postural observation - practice

16.30 – 17.30 laryngeal dynamic and palpation - practice

Day  3

9.30-10 30 the evaluation chart  - workshop

10.30 -11.30 posture and larynx - practice

11.30 – 12.30 practice assessment of the patient - practice

12.30 -13.30 lunch

13.30 -15.30 case assessment - practice

15.30 – 16.30 dysphonia protocol, misuse and overuse, vocal fatigue - practice

16.30 – 17.30 how to manage the patient in team - workshop

About the course leader

Mauro Banfi, physiotherapist and osteopath specialized in vocal performers, particularly singers. With over three decades of experience, he holds a highly respected position within Italian profession, music, and operatic circles, musical theatre schools etc. Lecturer in the clinical vocology master of “Nuova Artec”, lecturer ASOMI Accademia di Osteopatia - Torino for the Visceral osteopathy courses and Voice and osteopathy.
